This map shows the literacy rates (color of the columns) of five African countries (Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, Rwanda, South Africa) over time and in the context of either absolute population counts or population density (height of the columns). The aim of this map is to visualise the spatial differences and temporal development of the literacy rates and their possible relation to population numbers. It also illustrates the difference between absolute population counts and population density and how important it is to know which measure one is talking about.
In the current view, the columns represent the absolute population counts (or estimates, if no census data is available). Additionally, the underlying choropleth maps shows the age range considered during the data acquisition of these literacy rates, as this varies greatly.
Clicking on one of the columns, shows further information about that specific area; such as e.g., name or the exact literacy/population values.
If the labels are not visible but the toggle button says they are on, zoom in to the data.
To access the map showing population density, click here or use the button in the header.
